TJ Allan (Director/Photographer/Image Maker) has been involved with film and television production his entire career. Beginning in 1983 as an Art Director, his panache for subtlety in advertising was a perfect fit for the television commercial world. He began directing in 1986, quickly building his directorial reel with spec spots that sold to clients in the United States and Europe. His knowledge in photographic techniques helped spawn relationships with manufacturers and ad agencies hungry for a ‘new look’. Clients such as Tyco, Tonka, Porsche, Visa, Seat, Repsol, Fortuna Racing, Telecel, Suzuki, Coca-Cola, GMC, Greg Rice Foundation, Dominican Republic and many more took full advantage of his ability to merge great art (color correction techniques, colorization, vignette, bleach bypass etc.) with stylized story telling and editing. With travel came opportunity, and Mr. Allan has worked in several locations worldwide including Spain, Portugal, Mexico, USA, Dominican Republic, Israel and more; honing his ability to manage productions here and abroad.
While fostering a career in motion pictures, TJ continued to shoot still photography. In his early years, TJ worked for numerous organizations, shooting docu-style imagery for stock photography companies and magazines. His work in South Africa garnered several published works, documenting the strife in Cape Town during the abolition of apartheid.
In 1990, TJ began working with ad agencies and clients to expand motion imagery into the print realm for marketing programs. He honed his skills in the studio, experimenting with non-traditional lighting techniques while expanding his artistic world through fine art photography. Cross processing, colorization, negative etching, hand painting emulsions and other techniques pushed TJ into new realms of art and science.
TJ took a brief repose from the television commercial world in 2002, making 2 feature length films and several documentaries. TJ’s love for indigenous and tribal communities has brought him all over the world, most recently Haiti.
Since completing his new studio just north of Manhattan, TJ has renewed his love for fashion and beauty photography bringing spectacular styling, incredible creative make up and hair professionals and a whimsical shooting eye to his clients.
